What is the advantage to using handmade soap?
How long does your soap last? What is a liquor bar? Are you eco-friendly? Do you offer a vegan bar? Are your products halal or kosher? Why doesn't Stanley Street use essential oils? |
In handmade soap the focus is on a higher quality experience. Natural oils are hand-picked to ensure the highest quality bar possible and nothing unnecessary is added or removed from our soap. Commercial soaping companies often dilute these precious oils or remove soothing glycerol to sell separately, leaving you with a harsh and incomplete product.
Our standard sized bars are designed to last 3 - 5 weeks in the shower. Our shave bars, when used properly, can last several months. Our liquor bars are made with liquor in the place of water. Liquor used in soap is very cleansing and creates an unparalleled, luxurious lather. Before mass production, soap was often made with liquor because of these qualities, but because of the expense has since been strategically removed from the public eye and memory. The core and guiding principles of Stanley Street Soap Co are environmental stewardship and consideration for human rights. Because of this we strive to use only ingredients which are sustainable, fair trade, and sourced in the United States. In addition, all of our packaging is plastic-free and bio-degradable or recyclable (even down to the adhesive in our labels). The only plastics used in our entire company are the reusable molds which we have had since day one. As we grow and are able to employ others, we plan to implement fair and responsible organizational practices. At this point in time we do not have the resources to offer a vegan option. Most vegan soaps are made primarily with palm oil, which is a leading cause of deforestation. We feel that it would be unethical to offer such a product until we have a supplier of sustainable palm oil, though we do have ambitions to do so in the future. The base of our bars now is tallow. Tallow is an animal byproduct, which means that animals are not raised for this purpose and the tallow otherwise goes to waste. No, the tallow used in our soaps is a byproduct of the pork industry. We are hard at work trying to find a responsible tallow alternative, but currently are unable to do so. We are firm believers in the health benefits to using essential oils. We also have dedicated ourselves to providing as many people as possible with an unrivaled bathing experience. Due to allergies, irritations, and medical restrictions, we've found that we would be unable to offer our product to all individuals if we were to use essential oils. In order to ensure a safe and comfortable experience for everyone, we have decided to use bio-grade fragrance oils (which are safe for all skin types and biodegradable) in all of our scented soaps. |
